New Governor of South Australia Major General Winston Dugan

London announced Major-General Winston Dugan 57 will be Governor of South Australia succeeding Sir Alexander Hore-Ruthven. He presided at a 1933 court martial and is expected to be knighted on return. His wife is popular with South Australians and he has a long army career including service in France and the South African War.

NSW government plans major relief and water schemes

Premier Stevens said the NSW government would lift relief work in country districts with new legislation early next month. The Flat Rock water scheme includes a concrete dam 42m deep, capacity 89 million gallons, easing Nowra supply from Cambewarra. Cost £26,000 with half funded by the Unemployment Relief Council and the rest loaned to the municipality over six years at 4 percent.

Pirie Junior Band Triumph At Saddleworth Contest

Pirie Junior Band conducted by Mr George Gummow won the aggregate cup at Saddleworth, leading in selection, waltz, and hymn with a margin of 11 points over Nuriootpa and Saddleworth, while Balaklava and Nuriootpa followed. The group visited Clare on return and was praised by officials and spectators for a well run contest and generous hospitality.

Five Injured In Lorry Smash At Spit Bridge Sydney

Five men were injured when a 42 motor lorry crashed into two telegraph poles at Spit Bridge entrance yesterday. Wally Broadford, 32, champion surf rider, was returning from a carnival. four others suffered fractures and crush injuries. Broadford and Gordon McKinnon, 27, were admitted to hospitals. The accident occurred as glare from headlights blinded the driver of an approaching car.
