Death of J. E. Dickie, Adelaide Fire Brigades Chief
Oldest and most respected fire chief in the Commonwealth, J. E. Dickie, chief of the South Australian Fire Brigades, died at Adelaide headquarters at six this morning after a two month illness. Born in England, he joined the London Fire Brigade before moving to Australia, where he helped establish Adelaide’s fire service. He rose from second in command to state commander, dying in office. He leaves two daughters, Dora Todd and Emily Smith. Interment was private.

On Friday night strong winds toppled a tree on the North Coast road near Beerwah. Arthur Simpson of Woodford swerved to miss the tree and struck Fred Weyer of Beerwah in the truck. A three ton truck plunged over a four foot embankment on the Geelong Queenscliffe road after a head on miss with a service car. The driver escaped with bruises and abrasions after being trapped in the wrecked cabin for some time. The road was narrowed to half width by construction.
