Radio reports from the Hide Maru say 13 crewmen survived the Kinsen Maru disaster 400 miles off Queensland after leaping into lifeboats and fighting three days at sea. The vessel foundered in a cyclone as pumps failed and engines flooded. Rescuers, aided by other ships, search for remaining lifeboats while Brisbanes receives the survivors.
Melbourne Friday Defence officials Northern plan aims to boost Australia’s defence at an annual cost of £1,000,000 for seven years. It would replace 6 in coastal guns with 16 in guns, raise navy to four 7,000 ton cruisers, add six pairs of sloops, and replace air force aircraft. The loan of three Leander type cruisers is being discussed with Britain, with a possible fourth at Cockatoo Island.

In Geneva on Friday the General Commission of the Disarmament Conference heard Ramsay MacDonald submit Britain's drastic armament cuts proposal. It calls for outlawing aerial bombing and bacteriological and chemical warfare and ties security to the Paris Pact. The commission adjourned to March 23 to study the plan.
