In Guadalajara Mexico a theatre fire caused by a short circuit in a high tension wire led to panicked crowd trampling several deaths. An additional twenty people were electrocuted when a wire fell on a rail in front of the gallery.
In New York on a Wednesday movement toward normal banking progressed with over 1,000 banks open nationwide and more to resume. The Harriman Bank chairman was arrested for alleged false entries intended to deceive the Comptroller of Revenue as the Stock Exchange planned to reopen tomorrow.
In Melbourne on Wednesday two Pentridge prison van escapees William Howard and Hilton Barkly were sentenced to 12 months in gaol. Barkly’s term runs concurrently with his seven year sentence. Howard’s adds to a three year term. Justice Wasley labeled them habitual criminals and noted little remorse. Barkly asked to leave Australia and his mother appealed for mercy. The court session was guarded by police and motorcycles during the escort.
There are 47 cases of infectious diseases in the isolation block at Pirie Hospital. Mr F McMahon told the board of management that all cases except one would be charged against the Local Board of Health. The norses? most likely nurses were off duty. an extra probationer was appointed and a special nurse engaged in the isolation block.
An annual St Patrick's Day concert at Town Hall features a full programme of orchestral vocal and instrumental items. Deputy Navigation Director urged vessels to watch for the Kinsen Maru or wreckage as Shinshi Maru joins the effort to resume searching.
Doctor Robert Vivian Storer sues Smiths Weekly for libel alleging the paper named him as unfit for medical practice and claimed he overcharged patients by diagnosing a specific disease. The paper pleads not guilty and truth. Hearing adjourned to tomorrow.
In Canberra on Wednesday Mr Scullin delivered a House speech attacking the Ottawa agreement and urging tariff policy change. He warned the government that the agreement's shadow loomed over the nation and that its middle course in tariffs was futile. Mr Parkhill countered that the policy aimed to serve all Australian interests, not just sections.

Ronald J. Markwick aged four was killed this afternoon by a kick from a horse in his father H Markwick’s stable in Campbelltown. The incident occurred in the gardener’s residence and injured others nearby. Police attended and the death is being investigated.

Grace Weston, 31, was found dead at her First Ave Brunswick home with a severed throat. Her husband John McKenzie Weston, 40, was charged with murder at City Court after police alleged he found her with a man earlier, then killed her with a razor following a quarrel.

Perth detectives probe the death of John Alfred Tiller a 28 year old storekeeper from Herne Hill found in rugged bush three quarters of a mile from an abandoned motor truck. A bottle in the truck allegedly held poison and a penciled note implied betrayal. Evidence suggests he did not swallow poison and showed no prior mental distress.
Paris reports engineer M Freysinner has drawn plans for a reinforced concrete tower two and a half times the Eiffel Tower height. The first platform at 1640 ft will be reached by inclined track cars. The tower would stand 2300 ft high, costing £450,000 to £550,000, and slated for Mont Valerian with completion by 1937.
A summons was issued today by the Victorian branch of the Meat Industry Employees Union against the Federal Meat Industry Union and Mr A D Newman Federal Secretary. The action seeks an order that respondents comply with the union rotes and relinquish refusal to hand possession of their offers to Victorian branch officials. The summons will be heard by a judge of the Arbitration Court.
