Lost items reported in a statewide drive include a Bedford wheel with 32 x 6 tyre and a brown tarpaulin between Butler's Bridge and six miles south of Port Broughton. Rewards offered. contact nearest police station. Additional lost items include several garments, a pearl earring, tinted glasses, a poetry book, a red overcoat, and a lady's fur coat with rewards and return notices.
An applicant placed as a clerk at Vian hospital by the Commonwealth Employment Service was recalled after a month. He had no trouble performing duties but found compiling wages sheets and calculating overtime difficult. After guidance on a simple method, he improved and stayed on the job.
BRISBANE authorities report a Lockheed Lodestar crash after takeoff from Balinga Aero drome near Coolangatta. All 21 aboard including 16 adults, two children, and three crew perished as flames engulfed the aircraft. Civil Aviation Minister Drakeford said weight limits were not the issue and the plane dived after a sharp ascent to about 200 feet.
Sails of Pirie's racing yacht Stormbird valued at £50 were destroyed when fire broke out in galvanised trunk laundry and workshop at the rear of M. D. Millar's residence in Tenth Street Pirie West. Pirie brigades responded promptly after a 4 pm call, preventing spread to the house. Two appliances attended, led by Station Officer J. Pitt. flames controlled quickly. Millar used a garden hose before firemen arrived. Paint ignited, damage to tools, shed interior, electric washing machine heat, and bathroom wall scorched. Cause unknown.
In Adelaide this week Mayor Mr Middle ton of Pirie hosted a luncheon at Centennial Hall in honor of Mr Anthony Eden. He also met Dr H C Coombs and Mr B B Richardson at a Savings Bank of South Australia board meeting and attended a Municipal Association gathering. R J Young of Broken Hill Associated Smelters returned from an overseas tour, and Mrs Young met him in Melbourne. Hospital patient Martin Owens of Arthur Street Risdon Park is progressing in Pirie Hospital. A list of racing entries follows with horses and stakes at various venues, including Sires Produce, Newmarket, and Brunswick Stakes events.
Amo rous driven by A Gath secured his second win with a front running performance in the Snowtown Derby. Tycoon attracted 7/1 to 8/1 odds as backers wagered on the second derby winner. Gate turnover declined to £1,134 across seven races with top placings by Daintiness Realm's Midget and Radiant Voyage among others.

A Hollywood woman in New York heard by telephone her son-in-law Emery Holt confess a grim plan then three shots. Holt killed his wife and a man he suspected as her lover and then took his own life. The tragedy unfolded after Holt warned he would act.

Two young gunmen robbed an eight car Baltimore and Ohio express near Martinsburg West Virginia last night stealing more than 1000 dollars in jewelry and cash from passengers and crew. Passengers described the duo as intoxicated or drugged. A Negro chef was lightly wounded when shots were fired. The robbers forced the engine to back to a road crossing then fled to a tavern taking a few hundred more dollars from patrons before escaping in a waiting car.
In Canberra on Thursday a bill to amend the Pharmaceutical Benefits Act was introduced in the Senate by Sen McKenna to require doctors to prescribe free medicines from the Government formulary. The amendment prescribes a £50 penalty for any doctor not using the Government form and the government expects the amendments to be challenged in court by the British Medical Association.
Stelios George admitted insufficient lawful means of support and was sentenced to six weeks in prison by Messrs A H L Goode and P E McMahon at Pirie Police Court. Prosecutor Sgt B C Merrett said the defendant claimed to be a seaman and had lost his papers and had been begging.
