Reported heavy Russian losses in renewed assaults around Viipuri as wartime diplomacy stalls. A communique says Soviet attacks southeast of Viipuri and along the Isthmus were repulsed while Finland and Italy coordinate coal shipments and cargoes of German origin are being released or redirected. The Lefnian colony in Helsinki is noted in dispatches.
Australian Associated Press reports Finnish delegates left Helsinki for Moscow for talks with the Soviet Union. Negotiations are at a delicate point with a time limit reportedly set to expire early this week. A Finnish official said a decision could come by Monday or Tuesday. If Russian proposals fail, fighting may continue. British envoys reached Stockholm to seek passage for troops amid fears of a swift Soviet push across Estonia.
Report from Finland says Soviet troops concentrate and gain shooting in coastal Viipuri Bay about 25 miles south of Viipuri. They occupy several small islands. Sweden denies pressuring Finland. Germany and US noted in talks about Finland aid. Paris and London discuss ways to bolster Finnish troops, contingent on Sweden allowing passage of men and munitions.
News censors report heavy Russian losses during a failed Finnish coast crossing. Soviet troops suffered artillery and air strikes as Finnish defenders repelled the assault, with casualties and matériel losses claimed amid disrupted supply lines.
British aviators engage German patrol boats in heavy North Sea action. Two Heinkel bombers shot down and two damaged, four enemy patrol vessels located near the Frisian Islands attacked. One crew reports a German rear gunner disabled, giving the Britons advantage to press patrols.

Dr N J Gilroy, formerly Bishop of Port Augusta, becomes Archbishop of Sydney at 44, succeeding the late Dr Michael Kelly. Coadjutor archbishop McCabe leaves for Sydney for the Requiem Mass as Mons M B Clune travels to Renmark to open a new convent. Prayers were offered in St Marks St Anthonys and Crystal Brook churches for Archbishop Kelly's repose.
The Whyalla branch of the Amalgamated Metal Trades Union opposes a Metal Trades Council recommendation to block sending arms to Finland. Members vow to dissociate from the council if such a recommendation is repeated and urge focusing on industrial mailers benefiting allied unions.
Mr M M Middleton of Crosby, Mann & Co was admitted to Sister Bray's Private Hospital after an explosion in his garage while he was cleaning engine parts. He was able to describe the scene to those present before being taken to hospital.
An anonymous call to the central ambulance station reports the body of Betty van Tonder aged 24 of Mouman found at Chowder Bay reserve. A stocking wrapped twice around her neck suggests strangulation and homicide. Police and a large search party investigated Clifton Gardens area after the report, with the body discovered this morning in rugged bushland.
Sydney report quotes Federal Attorney General W M Hughes saying no development in the coal strike over the weekend and that though technically begun its effects are not yet felt. All coal miners will cease work tomorrow, with essential services holding reserves for some time.
Woolloongabba branch of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen condemned the coal strike and warned the Combined Railways Union against decisions in support of miners. They declared branch funds would not aid the miners and stressed no strike during wartime.
Heavy rain left extensive floodwaters in the Tully and Ingham regions. Roads were under up to 12 feet of water as rescue efforts sought two men missing and an Aboriginal searcher who left three days earlier has not been heard from.
Mr HF Fawcett of Balmoral road left work Saturday suffering with a strained neck. Mr A T Huckwell, injured in a call from the Dwight Lloyd plant, shows rapid progress in Pirie Hospital. Len Phillips of Wilkins street is in Pirie Hospital and able to leave bed yesterday. Mr J Garner of Azume vod be remains unconscious in the hospital ward.
