In Pirie Police Court, Delorne Elding faced a carelessness case after a 5.15 am crash on Pirie Gladstone road. Elding claimed sleep deprivation. witnesses discussed memory reliability and statements made after the accident. The magistrate weighed whether lack of wakefulness proved carelessness beyond doubt.
A deputation from the Public Service Association met Premier T Playford to press for three weeks annual leave for SA public servants, aligning salaries and conditions with the Commonwealth Public Service. They argued three weeks leave, higher junior car allowances, and inclusion of the Public Service Miscellation in job invitations. The Premier said a reply would come by the end of next week.
A jury returned not guilty verdicts on murder charges and manslaughter in a Brisbane court after a 12 day trial. Witnesses described a violent scene and car damage while the defendant, aged about 19, faced cross examination and late night travel details. The judge discharged the defendant with the crowd leaving the dock arm in arm.

Coroner Tingate notes no clear proof of neglect or noncompliance with precautionary measures, while likely causes include lightning and arson. Evidence suggests burning off at the usual time was risky, and the fiercest fires in the state's history may have overwhelmed mills despite clearing efforts.
