The Commonwealth plans to restart assisted migration from Britain under a nomination system. Migrants will be told they won’t lose British National Insurance benefits. Before approval, each migrant must pass a UK medical exam and be deemed suitable for life in Australia.
The United Kingdom and Commonwealth governments agreed under the Empire Settlement Act to fund passage money for approved migrants. Married couples with a child under 19 would pay £11 net, couples without a child £16 10, female household workers £11, other adults £16, juveniles under 19 £11, and those 14 to 17 £5 1.
Sir Colin Fraser visits Pirie as Pirie Local Court presides. The Commonwealth approves a grant to subsidize one half of tourism steamer fare for retired British Army officers and civil servants resident in India who seek permanent migration to Australia. Alderman Davis moved that the council notify the employer that it objects to employees in constant corporation service doing outside work.
