Britain enforces coal export ban, Italy faces impact as six Italian colliers are examined in Deal and Rotterdam coal exports halt. Germans on the Western Front held a British post but recaptured. Finnish forces repelled a Russian crossing near Viipuri, with 300 men reaching safety.
Six Italian colliers from Dutch ports are escorted to the Deal contraband base for examination over suspected German coal aboard. More vessels were reported near the Downs, with Rome surprised by the move. British action follows government decision to seize German coal cargoes for Italy.
The Times diplomatic correspondent reports Britain will stop all German coal exports regardless of destination. The Government hopes to resume talks on supplying Italy with coal to replace German shipments. If Italy finds other markets, Britain will not object to avoid harming Italian industry. In Parliament Mr Cross said neutral port German coal shipments would be detained. He noted Rotterdam coal exports in Italian vessels have ceased.

John Edward Wilks of Peterborough, laborer, appeared in Bankruptcy Court after his estate was sequestrated on April 7 1980. The statement of affairs shows liabilities and a claim of unemployment contributing to the bankruptcy. His wife’s estate was sequestrated the same time. He said he bought a house from the State Bank in 1990 and later lost it due to inability to meet instalments with one dependent child. He now earns a living as a sheep shearer while other local hospital admissions and a large wartime service discussion follow in the report.
Stronger than expected support for Prime Minister Mr A G Menzies was forecast in Sydney by United Australia Party members. They believe Menzies would be in a stronger position for negotiations with Mr A G Cameron, leader of the United Country Party, if Cameron led the Opposition after the by election result. The view circles around the party and Melbourne discussions noted Menzies would meet Cameron in Melbourne tomorrow.
Winsome Waters of Forest Range was committed for sentence in Adelaide Court on a charge of grievous bodily harm to her baby daughter Maxine Dawn Waters. A police interview at Walkerville Home of Mercy revealed Waters said she gave birth last December and after the baby woke her on February 14 she grabbed the infant and inflicted head injuries. Dr Annve Mocatta described Waters as a moral delinquent, recommending segregation rather than imprisonment.
Sydney reports mineworkers in northern New South Wales vote overwhelmingly for a general strike to begin next Monday. Only two of seven meetings rejected the stoppage recommendation, with more than half of Australia’s mineworkers in favor.
