In Pirie Local Court yesterday the Ellen street block assessment fell from £2,596 to £2,000 and Florence street from £739 to £300, marking about a 20 and 60 percent cut respectively. Neighbors freed him and he received medical care from Dr B I G Johnston as an ambulance arrived.
Italian storekeeper Micali Mamoni aged 35 was shot and killed in Innisfail main street. The gunman surrendered to police after driving from Mourilyan. Mamoni’s body bore serious injuries. a youth passenger wounded in the incident remains hospitalized. The assailant claims a prior brawl led to the attack. The injured youth is recovering amid ongoing police inquiries.
In Melbourne a Tariff Board inquiry heard from Mr. Dubvey Bekteecheasy of Biewdgeeine Corporation arguing that current duty and import protection are essential for Australia's electrolytic zinc industry. Prices have fallen to record lows and demand dropped from 1,438,009 tons in 1929 to 797,000 in 1932. The company cites Risdon refining works and Port Pirie lead smelters, plus roasting and acid plants at Port Pirie and Wallaroo, as key to national mining security. They warn removal of duties could flood Australia with cheaper imports, threatening local production and profits. Dividends and profits from 1930–31 onward are noted, with several years of arrears addressed by a dividend payment this month.
