The jury retired for about two minutes to return a verdict of not guilty. Mrs Meynell was discharged and her husband embraced her as she left. The judge suggested it may be unsafe to find death due to external causes and warned against convicting of murder or manslaughter without further evidence.
Edward Trevor Rees a 59 year old stationmaster at Exeter was struck on the head with an iron bar during his shift in Windsor street Largs and robbed of 15 pounds in the office till. He fought his attacker and was left dazed bleeding before the man fled. Rees was stitched and admitted to hospital.
The St. Pauls Choir’s representative Wis mide fy presented Miss Bunty Garnonplell with electroplate fish knives to mark her impending marriage. Rev J W Scholefield praised her valued choir services and wished her happiness.
An elderly man named Mr. Schmidt was struck and killed crossing the street by a lorry driven by Wilfred George Eckert age 16 of Quorn an employee of Prest Limited. Dr W A J Nairn of Quorn attended the scene and confirmed death. Quorn and Port Augusta police will prepare a report for coroner Mr A C Thompson.
Mrs J K Ekers of Melbourne arrived in Pirie yesterday on the East West express and will depart for Adelaide tonight then return to reside on Goode road with her son Brian Ekers. Fred Lavis of Hoopers Furnishing Arcade Limited visited Pirie briefly and returned to Adelaide last evening. Mr H P McLachlan of Partridge street Glenelg, a racehorse owner, collapsed and died while visiting Adelaide. Mrs D Beyer returned from Adelaide to Baroota. Miss Pearline Trott, discharged from Pirie Hospital, returned to Port Germein. Mrs T H Glasson of Port Germein discharged and convalescing at home. Les Madigan, 15, of Gladstone, an inmate of Pirie Hospital, hopes to go home. R G Casey announced N K S Brodribb appointed controller general of munitions supply.
In blinding rain the Lepena airliner wrecked while landing at Wynyard. It carried six passengers and a crew of two. the undercarriage and machines were destroyed. The machine overshot the aero drome and came to rest on a road. No injuries were reported.
Lawlor, 43, admitted unlawful act charges after a shooting near Helrave square as Kent entered a war event. He pleaded guilty to intent to damage property and endanger life. He was released on bond of over a year on condition he leaves for Australia within a month.
The Federal party executive altered the representation basis for the NSW unity conference. Industrial circles call it a compromise and a setback for Mr Lang and his supporters. It gives factions until July 9 to decide and moves the conference from July 29 to August 26 to allow candidate selection.
