Sydney police shield principal witnesses as inquest into James Smith and Reginald Holmes death resumes. Holmes slain near Harbor Bridge. Brady, 12, charged with murder. Witness accounts reveal alleged weapon use, blood traces, and defendant motives amid tense public interest.
In Brisbane, Mrs. Elizabeth Henrick, 75, died after a kerosene lamp fire lit her bedclothes. She woke and escaped to the floor where she collapsed amid smoke. relatives discovered her unaware of others nearby as the room filled with smoke.
Det Set Carey and Abbott with Webster and Speed arrest Clifford Earl Smiles, husband of the dead woman. Police allege Mrs Smiles died by suffocation, not gas, and body placed in a gas filled room after death while the child died from gas poisoning. Two counts of murder laid at 3.15 am at the city watch house.
In Sydney at King's Cross a horse drawing a fruit cart mounted the footpath and collided with a trolley bus. The vehicle toppled and wrecked as the horse sped down Bayswater road narrowly missing pedestrians. Passengers were thrown as crowd scenes continued and officials attempted to calm the frenzied animal.
Huge volumes of lead have been unloaded at the Smelters since last Monday with 15 000 tons expected to pass the wharfs in eight days. Vessels City of Delhi Moopta Havel Mungana Brisbane and Wessel aided the surge while Thermopylae prepared for the entire cargo. About 400 tons of lead will be lightered to the anchorage for transfer to Thermopylae as cranes and labor shift with the Aeon due bringing coke and coal today.

A Newcastle bound train carrying about 200 excursionists collided with a London bound packet near Welwyn at midnight. Eight carriages telescoped. fourteen people were killed and forty injured, many seriously. It was the worst accident in the London North Eastern railway’s history.

George Mundy, 23, of Moyer's Lane, Adelaide, is admitted to Adelaide Hospital with three scalp wounds a face wound and a deep cut on the left wrist following an alleged assault near Tamvu Shanter and Grenfell Street. Constable Taverner found Mundy bleeding on Rundle Street East while William Duell, who supported Mundy, said Mundy claimed he had been in a fight in which his brother was also involved. Detective McGrath is investigating.
Sunday league clash at Adelaide Oval drew Port and West to a 17 17 finish amid a turbulent last ten minutes. Several players clashed while two men were carried off unconscious after a West charge.
