A deputation led by A. W. Lacey and J. C. Fitzgerald met Attorney General Jeffries to argue for a resident Pirie magistrate. They supplied statistics of court work in Port Pirie and delays in local cases, while Jeffries pledged careful review and to balance economy with access to local legal services.
Senior Fireman Clarence William Wells of the North Adelaide Fire Brigade, aged 50, was killed when a motor hose carriage toppled at O’Connell Street. He was thrown head first after the horses swerved near George Street. He died en route to hospital.
Senator Guthrie of the UAP moves to adjourn the Senate to debate the urgent national issue of abolishing the land tax. He calls the tax uneconomic unfair and un-British, harming Australia’s sheep and wool sectors. Sir G F Pearce replies that the tax was cut by one third and relief is being considered in the Budget.
In a resumed inquest, Salem Macksad a 51 year old Syrian shopkeeper stands charged with murdering Richard Supple 42 of Gilbert Street City. Evidence includes stains on linoleum at Macksad shop and witness accounts of tense exchanges between the two men prior to the death. Mrs Supple allowed to remain in court despite defense objections.
Mr J C Condon state manager for New Zealand Perpetual Forests Limited visits Pirie and stays at Royal Exchange Hotel. Mr T Assenden of the same firm is also a guest there. Mr W C Colihan of Dunlop Perdrhy Rubber is at Barrier Hotel. Inspector R A Jackson from Architect in Chief's Department returned to Adelaide. Mr HG Nesbit plans to return to Adelaide today and is at Federal Hotel. Mr T Johnson superintendent of Port Pirie Gasworks left Pirie for Adelaide on business. Mr J O'Da proprietor of Morfans and wife returned to Pirie yesterday from a trip to Adelaide.
Yesterday's high reached 66.8 degrees while the low was 57.1 from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. The 24 hour period ending at 8.30 a.m. recorded a low of 55.6 degrees.
The Royal Commission into the petrol industry met at the Arbitration Court with powers to compel witnesses. Shell and Vacuum Oil discussed responses under new Commonwealth legislation. Shell would answer some questions soon, others need months. Vacuum Oil warned of nine million documents and proposed appointing an accountant.
Roland Craig was found guilty tonight of murdering Bessie O Connor at National Park on December 14 and was sentenced to death. He proclaimed innocence from the dock. Two prior trials ended with juries failing to agree. Craig is already serving a 20 year term for the Woollahra murder of May Miller last year.
In Lameroo early today three men smashed into three offices then stole a car. Unable to start it they took another vehicle. The owner watched from his window unaware his car was the culprit and the trio sped toward Adelaide.
Rev. Frederick Phillips visiting from Hyderabad India and his sons Arthur 17 and William 14 were saved from a raging surf by Keith Hudson of the Bronte Surf Club. Hudson stripped to his underclothes as two mates handled the reel and brought the trio to shore.
Safebreakers made determined attempts to blow open two strongrooms at the offices of Messrs. Knox and Hargraves solicitors Ware Chambers King William Street City last night.
J B Hobbs argues in Fight for the Ashes that bodyline bowling aimed to intimidate batsmen was dangerous and unjustified. He credits Larwood’s pace and skill with subduing Bradman and Australia, urging Australia to curb offensive barracking and seek a solution to the bodyline problem.
Mr. Jeffries the Attorney General promised consideration of a movement by stipendiary Alsatian clubs in four states protesting against the Graziers' Federal Council urging a ban on sterilisation of Alsatians. The recommendation was framed at a Melbourne council meeting on Wednesday.
