In Canberra on Friday Senator Reid alleged irregularities by unnamed Customs officers in Sydney. He cited a trade undercut case where a business man paid money to gain free passage and matched a rival’s price. Debate also noted Hayes amendment on reducing duties on trade tools, which failed.
In Melbourne a magistrate called the case the most awful and disgusting before the court. James Darcy and his wife Rose Darcy were each sentenced to one month in gaol for failing to provide adequate food clothing and lodging for their five children. Attorney General S W Jeffries informs A G Lacey that Port Pirie’s request for a resident magistrate cannot be complied with at present. The decision leaves the committee led by J G Sweeney and Mayor W Hy Threadgold pressing to keep the matter before the government for future consideration.
