Crowds mobbed the streets angrily after the death of a fireman during a blaze. Hotels shops and other buildings were looted and set alight as authorities struggled to restore order. Officials urged calm as injuries were reported and investigations began.
A mob of about a thousand attacked Kalgoorlie streets killing a volunteer fireman after a clash with Italians. The rioters destroyed hotels, a wine saloon, lodging, and shops amounting to about £30,000 in damage. Police were unable to halt the violence as twenty arrests were made and tensions followed a fatal injury earlier linked to an Italian barman.
In Adelaide on Tuesday a market disturbance hit gold stocks as sellers marked prices down while buyers stayed away. The Golden Mile companies bore the brunt as trade slowed and a 60,000 turnover fell about 25,000 shares below the daily average, signaling weaker profits.
