British AP report from London says the Italian destroyer Vega, 642 tons, was sunk in the Sicilian Channel on January 10. Other details note a British cruiser set fire to the second destroyer before it escaped in a haze and a British plane later located and...
The Admiralty reports the cruiser Southampton was set ablaze by Italian and German dive bombers in the Sicilian Channel action on January 10. Unable to tow to port, she was sunk by a Royal Navy warship. The submarine Pandora also sunk two Italian supply ships in the Central Mediterranean.
Whyalla reports meningitis cases including one hospitalized child and a suspected case, with two prior fatalities in nine days. Health minister McEwin vows strict containment as Dr A A Wallace and Iron Knob efforts expand, and inspectors from the Central Board of Health visit the district.
Claude Carnell, renowned pianist and bandleader, departs Pirie after shaping local music life since 1933. He built a five-piece band, popularized piano accordion in Pirie, opened Hawaiian Palais and Arctic Palais clubs, and staged numerous dances, theatre entertainments, and open-air events across the district.
A tunnel under construction near Kerrabee 21 miles from Sandy Hollow collapsed killing two workers and injuring eleven others. Speakers were Jones, Maly vha, Bonner, W Govan, Hosking, and B J Cocks. Apologies from Eriksson, E Morgan, Smith, Onslands, Upton. Carnell thanked all, hoping to continue helping learners to the beat. Attendees included Warner, Taylor, Currie, Mayer Reed, Reid, Bonner, A K Ruffy, R J Cocks, Govan, Jones, Hosking, Benn, and Poses.
