Australian forces push two miles through Bardia fortifications with a nine mile breakthrough in the enemy line. More than 8,000 Italians taken prisoner as the advance from the southwest continues.
Australian troops press the Italian line at Bardia in a two mile breach that includes about half the fortifications. Cairo dispatches say 8,000 prisoners taken and operations continuing with swift, relentless assault from the southwest to drive the Italians back. Melbourne and Cairo reports highlight a hard fought advance despite Italian preparations and strong defense.
London dispatch reports Rome broadcasts declare a hopeless stand by Italian forces at Bardia as the keynote of long explanations. Fascist leaders hold meetings nationwide urging mobilization of reserves and resources for the war effort.
Latest dispatches describe Greek forces extending local gains in Albania. Athens states no Italia counterattack has succeeded and Greek troops hold key forward positions on high ground in the northern sector. Weather may dictate the next phase of operations.
Three men injured in a Narrander plane crash. Sgt Pilot A L B Smith aged 20 from Darling Point Sydney died. Leading Aircraftman LM Ross of Balwyn Melbourne severely injured and admitted to Narranders District Hospital. Flying Officer D T Everett and Sgt Pilot D J Bourke struck by the plane. Everett with a fractured ankle, Bourke treated for minor injuries. Sgt Pilot Smith joined the RAAF last October.
In Adelaide the Navy Minister W M Hughes was described as a little bit at sea over plans to shift freight from sea routes to land rail lines. Premier Playford said the real issue is keeping sea routes open while considering a uniform gauge from Port Augusta to Broken Hill. He noted Hughes may be referencing widening the Pirie to Broken Hill line and warned coal transport by rail would cost more than sea delivery unless routes were blocked.
A fragmented note shows a Red Cross appeal raising funds totaling 1900 95 pounds with donations acknowledged. It references a competition won by Mr Fo Ward and mentions contributions from Chrisan Why Caragianis and Corisanthy Ceragianis, bringing the total to date to 1,007 40 pounds.
Washington reports estimate seven American battleships, twenty cruisers, sixty destroyers, and one aircraft carrier in Hawaiian waters.
