General Blamey reports rapid Allied advances in the South West Pacific and notes the Japanese have not yet felt the full weight of Allied pressure. He says Allied supplies are improving and Japanese tenacity is weakening as troops move from jungle to open country. Health of Allied troops is improving.
MacArthur reports four enemy ships entered the harbor and two were shot down while 18 planes were destroyed over Rabaul. Americans consolidate sectors around the Saidor air strip after a surprise landing. Australian troops capture Nuzen and push along the Huon Peninsula.
London dispatch reports Novograd Volynsk and nearby rail lines were stormed and captured by Russian troops. The operations form part of a broad advance along a 260 mile front west and south of the Kiev bulge, with Russian columns nearing Korosten and approaching the Polish border. Berdichev and nearby strongholds faced intensified pressure as the offensive continued.
Don McVicar son of Mr and Mrs N W McVicar of Solomontown suffered severe head injuries in a road accident on Warnertown road December 14 and remains in Pirie Hospital with his parents hopeful he will stay there at least three more weeks.
Royal Australian Air Force planes supported the U S Fifth Air Force in New Guinea operations and aided troops at New Britain. Beaufighters and other aircraft conducted sweeps against shipping, attacked barges, and undertook anti submarine patrols. The effort reduced Japanese communications and weakened coastal logistics, with more than 170 barges and small ships destroyed or damaged recently.
The Schools Patriotic Fund lorry arrives in Pirie today and stays until Friday to collect waste for war production. Households and shops are urged to save cardboard, newspapers, wrap pers, cement bags, records and other scrap for pickup by SPF volunteers.
Victorian political circles expect Mr R G Menzies to be appointed Chief Justice of Victoria succeeding Sir Frederick Mann who has resigned. Possible alternatives include Jose a Gen Sir Edmund Herring Sir James MacFarlan and Mr Justice Lowe. The appointee may also serve as Deputy Governor with a cabinet meeting in a fortnight.
Lieut-Col A J Caddy returned to duty after time with his wife and family in Solomontown on Monday morning. Mr H Hutchins of Pirie Piano Forte Tuners' Association is available for service via Barrier Hotel. Mr F G Butler of Warnertown admitted to Pirie Hospital medical ward after railway work. After over two weeks in hospital Lillywhite of Grey Terrace Solomontown discharged from surgical ward. Mr FB Nolan remains in Pirie Hospital medical ward.
A fox terrier guided Mr W W Sampson and a wandering two year old boy toward Balmoral road before the boy was returned to his mother after hours apart. Police Constable J W Corner coordinated the reunion as the terrier's loyalty impressed the family. The boy, son of Mr and Mrs Drakeford, Balmoral road, was found safe. Also, Alpha Terrace resident Barton Finch, son of Mr and Mrs M M Finch, will soon train with the Royal Australian Air Force. his elder brother Jack is an RAAF pilot.
In Footscray a baby died at Children's Hospital and grandmother Mrs. Annie Luke is gravely injured after an axe assault at a boardinghouse. Suspect held by police. Victims include John Kennett eight months and James Toohey 21 treated at hospital for injuries. The assailant rushed the room and was overpowered by lodgers.
Over the New Year holidays Pirie residents, especially Ellendale children, used home made playground equipment and steam appliances fashioned by local tradesmen. Despite sparse details, the town reported heavy manual effort, ongoing improvement schemes, and plans for curb plantings, fencing, and school project work at Pirie High School with some staff taking time off.
In a district court, George Olsen faced charges over clothing coupons theft. The judge dismissed the case, citing insufficient evidence and a lack of proof beyond a strong suspicion after testimonies about purchased items and missing coupon pages.
A five month old baby boy, strapped in a stroller, slipped from an electric train at Woolstonscroft when the handle was jerked from the mother's grip. The stroller rolled from the doorway but the infant suffered only a slight forehead cut. An airman later picked up the stroller and took the baby to hospital.
Mr Calwell Minister of Information issued a writ claiming defamation from K G P ODay and the Yorke Press. The writ followed posters headed He Horror and requested trial by judge and jury. No damages were specified.
