In Rangoon a special tribunal sentenced U Saw and eight others to death in the State redignation trial. U Saw, convicted of abetment to the murder of Prime Minister U Aung San and six cabinet ministers on July 19, was described by the tribunal president as the brain behind the assassination. He received the death sentence calmly.
After over two weeks of combat intense shelling, Nanking fell to Communist forces yesterday afternoon. Reliable sources in Nanking report the city was heavily shelled and left in shambles as rebel troops advanced under cover of darkness and force.
A string of underground blasts in Boston downtown sent manhole covers flying up to 50 feet and shattered storefronts up to the fourth story. At least 20 people, including firemen and pedestrians, were injured by flying glass as crowds fled and police patrolled against looting amid gas odor and fumes.
Two American pilots died when their Mustane fighter aircraft collided above Bofu air base near Tokyo. One plane spiraled into the sea and both bodies were recovered.
In Warsaw a Polish Press Agency bulletin said talks between Poland and Britain on compensation for Polish nationalisations affecting British citizens had progressed in a friendly atmosphere. A Foreign Ministry spokesman noted a payment had been made to establish a basis for normal trade relations among Poland Britain and the U.S. zones of Germany.
Perry Brothers farmers of Warner town district report ongoing vandalism and theft. They say no known grudge against them, but tractors and equipment have repeatedly been damaged or stolen, with no clear suspect identified.
A spokesman for the Service Stations' Association predicted further petrol cuts beyond the 10 percent force reduction from next Thursday. He said lower consumption was certain as the dollar pool quota to Australia is set, likely causing another monthly ration decrease.

Amateur Swim and Lifesaving Club hosted delmant swimbling events at Federal Dock. Blue leads points, Red third, with listed senior and junior events and times. Results include W Lean 78 secs, J Rotaris 89, J Johanson 76, 55 yds junior events and 33 seconds in shorter sprints.

Vive ietders of Phele sub-branch of Returned Servicemen's League were pallbearers yesterday at the funeral in Pirie Cemetery of David Donald Cunningham of Dery Well via Marree who died in Virie Hospital. He was wounded in the 1914 14 war while serving with the 32nd Battalion and was buried beneath a Union Jack. The ceremony was conducted by Rev. G. W. Schotefield. He was born at Derby Tasmania 31 years ago and worked in wine making in Tasmania and sugarcane cutting in Queensland before long employed as a letter by Commonwealth Railways. He was a son of Mr and Mrs George Cunningham pioneers in Derby. Five brothers and three sisters survive including Walter George Patrick Clarence tall of Derby Russell Melbourne and Mesdames J. Saville and H. Salter of Victoria. Mrs Salter travelled from Melbourne to attend the funeral. Pallbearers included J. Bromilow Brine M. Clifford and T. McGuire of the Returned Servicemen's League.
