Port Pirie Council faces a cautious review of all expenditures as auditor E. D. Russell urges thorough investigations before committing funds. He flags arrears in rates and ambulance, hospital, and isolation fees, stressing aggressive collection and economic restraint amid weak wheat prices.
Firemen battled a blaze at the Daraobalese Mest Works in Forbes New South Wales, starting in the roof of the main freezing chamber. Wiremen fought the outbreak high above ground as joists burned, risking collapse before the fire was extinguished after four hours.
Council forwards telters of candolence to relatives of the late Mrs. M. V. Zubrinkl the late Mr A. & MacLeod and the late Miss Gemillon. Mrs Dey and Godey praised the late Miss Hamiltons charity work in Port Pirie.
A farmers conference in Adelaide today decided to earmark about £30,000 of grant funds for wheat. Payment will be in yearly dividends with the remainder allocated to wheat sowing. A 20 year old, William Ambrose Bulley of Augusta Street Huddersfield, was thrown under a motor lorry today. He sustained terrible injuries and died in Adelaide Hospital sixteen hours later.
Anticipated reports say Hon. L. L. Hill will stand for East Torrens at the next State election but will not publicly announce until after returning from Tasmania. Party leaders urge a formal declaration this afternoon as internal bids and seat reshuffles stir the Labor camp.
In an unprecedented move Judge Dethridge allowed a toss to decide when a wage increase would commence for hotel workers. The Federated Liquor and Allied Trades Employes Union and employers reached a settlement, restoring 2/6 for males and 1/6 for females with meals at 4/6. The coin toss favored the union, securing about £500.
Mrs Jolla Simpson longtime Pirie resident and former mayoress died at 22 King Street Solomontown after a brief illness. Born October 6 1856 in Hindmarsh Adelaide she helped civic progress with husband John Simpson during their years in Pine Pirie and was active in the Methodist Church Benevolent Society and local projects including the Central Methodist Mission Building and Dunn Hall. Six children survive including Stanley David Frink and Miss Clonee Simpson. Funeral at 3 20 pm overseen by Revs Kilmartin and Strange.
Melbourne judge Beeby approved a wage award for fellmongering workers effective January 1 for 42 months. It allows female labor in certain sections, sets adult wages from £2 9s to £9 9s a week in Victoria and £3 4s 10d to £5 4s 8d in New South Wales. Plantwork rates stay unchanged.
Five year old Pen Huggett, described as an elderly resident, died of suffocation in a Geelong bed when a sheet caught fire. The bedding and mattress were burned, and investigators believe the child was reclining in bed when the incident started.
Port Wirie Infant School joined by primary pupils and artists in a lively Alhambra Theatre concert. Dutch and folk songs, dances, and solos delighted a large audience with items like Daisy Ball and BabyWir. Sydney Tuesday report notes the NSW Legislative Council moved to reconsider its last week decision on referring the Meat Industry Bill to a select committee. Attorney-General called for suspension of standing orders to allow debate, Mr Manning moved to rescind the prior decision, and the motion carried 47 to 40 returning the measure to the business paper.
Sydney Tuesday. Quinn aged 38 a cook was killed when a cooler exploded at Gearin O Riordan Limited soap factory Mascot. A hall was torn in the roof and a mile away. Quinn's coat was frightfully injured and it is thought he was struck by the cooker lid which was blown through the roof and landed some distance away.

Victorian veteran bowler Ironmonger ripped through Queensland with seven wickets for 13 runs in the Sheffield Shield match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Queensland were dismissed for 74 in their second innings, Victoria winning by an innings and 439 runs after leading 426 and 339 in the first two innings. Ironmonger bowled 43 overs with five maidens, delivering a masterclass that left Queensland batsmen baffled and the home crowd buoyant.
An Adelaide Oval thriller ends with New South Wales beating South Australia by three wickets. Oldfield and O'Reilly guided NSW past the required total as Wall and Grimmett led SA bowling. Final fall of wickets shows NSW chase built on solid partnerships and disciplined bowling from SA.
Solomontown Beach Improvement Committee requests one-way traffic on the beach road in the afternoon and evening of the annual carnival. Port Pirie Council approves this for December 28. Festooning will be arranged for the carnival night.
Henry Gilmore aged 48 was found unconscious at Jase Bar on Sunday and died today. His skull fracture and loss of consciousness were reported. Police believe he may have been attacked after offering a drink to a passerby. Several witnesses are being questioned as part of the inquiry.
The Christmas Cheer Fund will close tomorrow night and parcel distribution will be at the Town Hall on Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fund relies on the community’s donations to support more than 4,000 people including 247 families and 340 men and is organizing gifts of food and fruit along with parcels to aid the poor and needy.
