A man-eater tiger, terrorising the district for three years, killed inspector Lewis and wounded his colleague Bathgate during an inspection. Lewis fired twice and fell after a desperate rescue attempt by Datgete. Bathgate lost an arm and was taken to hospital. Lewis left a widow and five children.
In Bay 3 the inquiry continued under Judge Paine after Mitchell’s death on October 3. The new Commissioner heard evidence for a long time on whether the hearing should be in camera. Samutl Lampard, fruiterer and longtime bookmaker, testified against police but withdrew an accusation against Constable Francis after confusing him with another officer. The hearing is proceeding.
