Demonstrations in Rome and surrounding provinces opened a strike by about 1000 workers. Police reinforced streets in jeeps. One group with gas masks used truncheons to arrest several strikers in a business district.
An Arab crowd occupied a Jewish synagogue in Jerusalem's old city this morning and raised the Arab flag before Haganah gunmen drove them out. A grenade from a passing Jewish truck in Haifa killed one and wounded four Arabs. The Palestine Government said wives and families of British government servants would not be allowed to leave Britain for Palestine after January 1 amid the administration's withdrawal.
ADELAIDE Thursday The State council of Retail Store Association proposed five day week 9 am to 6 pm Monday to Friday and 9 am to 11 30 am Saturday pending new legislation. The resolution vows to oppose reintroduction of a late shopping night.
Melbourne report says with voting finished in 14 Victorian branches, militant candidates were assured of a sweeping victory as State executive ballots closed. Chandler, state secretary of the Building Workers' Industrial Union, announced the results tonight.
North Korea faced a currency confiscation and store closures by a Soviet controlled government. Amateur Swim Club launches season with four teams for seniors and juniors to contest a club pennant. Promising junior swimmers expected to post fast times. Fr M Higgins known as the Sky Pilot from Barrier country landed at Pirie Aerodrome after flying from the Barrier, becoming the first Catholic priest to pilot a plane to Pirie. He traveled with Fr T O Sullivan of Broken Hill, and they met Fr P Coffey, administrator of Pirie parish, renewing an old acquaintance after two years. They inspected St Mark's Church and adjacent hall, gutted by fire in October.

Mr E H D Russell reports the Postmaster General has extended Mambray Creek telephone exchange hours after revenue justification. The exchange will operate weekdays from 9 am to 12 pm, 6 pm to 1 pm, Saturdays 9 am to 1 pm, and Sundays plus holidays 9 am to 10 am.
