In Dunshall Scotland a motorcycle being repaired in a kitchen exploded during supper. Robert Lockhart his wife two sisters and two daughters were present. The women died from burns and the couple suffered serious injuries as doors and windows failed to provide escape.
United States star Helen Wills defeated J B Hawkes of Australia in a one set match at Forest Hills New York. The score was 6 to something not fully recorded, delivering a decisive win for Wills in the exhibition event.
London dispatch reports a frenzied extraordinary meeting of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in a London hotel. Fashionably dressed women and top-hatted men joined a heated protest as they demanded Lord Banbury vacate the chair. A man stood on a chair and shook his hat toward Lord Banbury, while a terrier yapped beside its mistress. The Motel Cecil was used to decide proxy admissibility following Chancery Court guidance.

Miss M. Robins a laundress of Regent Street Adelaide stepped onto a moving motor car after a dance at Unley. The car halted suddenly, throwing her to the ground and fracturing her skull. She was treated at Adelide Hospital where she remains.
United Service reports a Havana hurricane yesterday that killed 200 people and left 10,000 homeless. Coffee crops suffered 200000 pounds in damage as wind swept a 20 mile wide path inland a boat was carried a quarter mile inland.

Crown Prosecutor Lenthall alleges Gertrude H. Gray visited her ill husband in Adelaide Hospital while keeping company with Constable Fear and later married him in a form of ceremony on June 12, 1928. Gray, 19, previously married Sydney Joseph Gray in Melbourne on December 21, 1890. three children born of that union. Gray and Fear described as known to be involved. Gray committed for trial after divorce proceedings and health issues cited.
Mr Justice Wasley jailed Archibald Searle Coe aged 22 a farm labourer for five years for an attempted offence against a girl at Berwick and two years for an offence against a child. The sentences were concurrent.
Miss Doreen Ham, 24, was lost for five hours in the densely timbered hills near Dalry. A large search party of familiar shooting party members tracked her down that night. She was exhausted but safe after officers and volunteers joined the efforts.
A nurse was attacked on a Yarra River bridge at night by a masked man who fled toward Kew after she resisted. The same man later harassed two more women. Police searched the Yarra banks in the Kew district but found no trace of the offender.
Walter Preston, also known as Walter Kimber, a noted Victorian footrunner, is disqualified for life by the Victorian Athletic League. He was recently convicted in the Criminal Court and released on bond on charges of signing false declarations and obtaining money under false pretences at Stawell and elsewhere.

Oaklands Hunt Club met at Moonee Valley in good weather with a satisfactory attendance. Results include Dale End winning the Cumberland Hurdles, Tea Bell taking the Sherwood Handicap, and Willanjie winning the Oaklands Hunt Cup amid a day of close tussles and several notable falls. The meeting featured multiple races with strong field bets and injuries reported.
Three ex Lord Mayors testified before the Coal Commission. Ross Saywell of South Clinton Colliery Co said he paid Woof £750 for supervising a 64 000 ton coal test. P W Stokes denied any arrangement with Woof or payment. Stokes called Woof a liar and a grafter. Woof linked to Maling allegations. Commission adjourned to tomorrow.
Mr Justice Campbell granted a rule nisi for a writ of prohibition to restrain Mr Gates from further proceedings on the conviction of Silas Young Maline. Maling was sentenced to six months for corruptly receiving £10,600. There are 20 grounds of appeal challenging magistrate's points of law.
In the House of Assembly Premier A L Butler said no Australian could replace Railways Commissioner W A Webb and that Webb will be re appointed until 1933 with the same salary as when first chosen. Opposition questions the term spanning future administrations and whether the Incoming Parliament should re consider Webb’s re appointment. Butler accepted full responsibility.
Yesterday at Zion Mall Pulteney Street a disturbance occurred at the Salvation Army free meal kitchen. Today 267 men received breakfast, and police restrained two women who attempted to disrupt the scene while unemployed men ate in peace. many praised the Salvation Army for reopening the kitchen.

United service reports the tramp steamer W. 3. McKinley battling a fierce gale near Panama with heavy seas washing away deck cargo and breaking the wheelhouse. Fourteen crewmen were washed overboard and never recovered after the ship lost steering and hatches were exposed.
In Doddinghurst Essex the rector Rev Franklin Jeane Hutchinson aged 45 has vanished since June 25 after stating a holiday plan. He left with secretary Miss Laura Thickett and a manservant named Straw. Straw departed July 21. Thickett, from Swinton, says Hutchinson accompanied her to Bishop Stortford before she continued to Swinton. his fate unknown. Hutchinson, once vicar of Swinton, was ordained in Bendigo Australia and became principal at a Lewisham school before moving to Doddinghurst in September 1927.
World heavyweight champion Gene Tunney toured as Mauretania neared Plymouth. He dodged crowds at the customs depot and boarded a limousine toward London. He refused to discuss an upcoming marriage and said he has quit boxing, plans a private life, and will present prizes at Tail Team Games (Ireland) before sightseeing in London, France, and Germany.
The Hospital Employees' Union seeks reintroduction of the Totalisator Bill with revenue pledged to hospital maintenance. They also urge Victoria to establish a state lottery modeled on the Quecom and Golden Casket schemes, to fund public hospitals.
A head on July 14 on Dynon Road Footscray killed Benjamin Farrar 50 a master engineer. Coroners committed Ern est Williams driver of the second motorcycle for trial on manslaughter. A passenger said Williams was on the wrong side of the road and did not attempt to avoid the collision.
