Police used force at times to disperse mobs as riots, arson, looting, and stone-throwing continue in central Calcutta. government imposes bans on gatherings and imposes restrictions while security forces stand guard.

In Ellis Beach near Cairns a man identified as Phillip Collin about 30 was fatally mauled by a 12 ft shark at around 3 20 p m. His wife and two children witnessed the attack as the shark struck three times. The body has not been recovered.
