In Melbourne on Thursday the Broken Hill Proprietary Company issued its annual report. Demand for pendants remained strong and output for the year was a record. Pig iron production reached 614,520 tons versus 68,950 previously, while steel ingots totalled 5428 tons compared with 763,18 in the prior year. Net profit rose to £1,300,460.
The board reluctantly accepted the resignation of Mr Emington Lewis from the position of director and managing director. Chairman HG Darling said Mr Lewis, who had been chief general manager, sought release to devote more time to the developmental programme.
In Melbourne by week’s end 365 men will be titled gas protection experts to instruct the public against gas attacks in all forms. The number is expected to grow tenfold within a year. In Adelaide a deputation from the Australian Government Workers' Association asked the Huspital Employes' Industrial Board to cut hours to 45 per week without pay reduction. The minister noted current hours are excessive but deadlocked on wage adjustments, and will review the matter.
