Allied forces press into Messina with the US Third Division at the city outskirts and shelling from the Italian mainland. German and Axis evacuations are reportedly shrinking as Allied air and sea forces harass remaining ferries and sea transports.
In Adelaide district a former Port Augusta resident and a Castle Street car proprietor were found dead in a car with windows closed and ignition on. A partly burned cigarette and empty flagon were found nearby, suggesting fumes overwhelmed the occupants before they could escape. The bodies were discovered near 79 on the roadside, prompting an inquiry by local authorities.
Forces report a landing on Sunday with no resistance and Allied control of key positions. A large Kadina High delegation led by Mr J K Nicholls will travel by midday train on Friday to Pirie for a weekend of football, hockey, basketball, and a social function. About 30 boys and staff will stay at Pirie hosts, with matches set for Saturday and a closing gathering Sunday night.
