Robinson MLC thanked for securing 5000 pounds from government to strengthen city protective embankments. He was urged to press to speed the funds release with minimal delays as the Upper House member uses influence.
An orange tree on Mr. A. G. Tunstall’s Wandearah property yielded a productive winter display. A single twig brought to The Recorder last evening bore 11 fine Washington navels, large and uniform in size.
The annual table tennis tournament opens this evening with the women competing at Seamen's Mission Hall while the men play tomorrow at M.C.A. Molly Gransden is favored for the women’s title and the men’s title contenders include Sullivan Holthouse Davies and Stieg.

The first new premises in Elles Street, a single storey modern butchery by Allchurch and Sons, opens today after demolition of old buildings. Foundations for an adjacent office block for F R Smith and Milne are laid this week. G J Coles and Co Ltd plans a branch on Eller reef. A uranium treatment plant rises at the northern end, while a large housing programme by the South Australian Housing Trust continues with much land held for future homes.
The Wandearah Hall opening featured new curtains and stage effects by N R Ferme and N B Jacobs with Miss Gladys Ferme assisting. Mr R Rodgers performed the ceremony in Port Pirie as a large crowd attended. Prizes for novelty dances went to Mrs N R Jacobs Miss Pauline Grieg and Mr S Gill.
Veronica V. Atkins, 61, of Mary Elie Street Pirie, suffered a severe scalp wound and shock after a utility vehicle knocked her down on Florence Street. A doctor attended at the scene and she was taken to Pirie Hospital where three stitches were inserted. The driver was Walter J. Schapel of Norman Street. She remained in serious condition yesterday.
The National Safety Council will meet tonight to plan Road Courtesy Week from August 24 to September 4. A select committee will be appointed to adjudge prizes for the best examples of road courtesy and details of a school essay competition will be announced later in the week.
The Town Hall hosts Harold Raymonds new variety program tonight featuring John Netting a former Pirican and his wife Joan as The Two Jays. Netting’s varied career spans Pirie West School Victoria and South Australia with acrobatics bell ringing ventriloquism and magic. Proceeds benefit Townsend House Brighton for blind and deaf children with performances also slated for Port Broughton Wednesday night.

Edward William Crittenden a 74 year old resident of Telowie collapsed and died inside a Pirie shop on Saturday morning. He was a regular visitor to Pirie by horse and cart and was not married.
Port dominated at Memorial Oval in a fine contest as Solomontown challenged early. W. G. Sutton’s whistle set a high standard while Port surged in the final term to seize the premiership tilt with strong performances from Polkinghorne Dominating Connelly and the Fitzgeralds.
Attendance stood at 1122 with gate receipts of £102 16s 6d. season record 1392. Solomontown leads Port 52.2 to 46.1 percent with two matches left before a final, Solomontown and Proprietary meet. Grieve and Cochrane shone, Audess shut down defense, and Port scored 34 in the second term as Blues held back.
