London to Leeds express rear collided near Doncaster with a following train. Seventeen people killed including a child and at least 74 injured, with 43 detained at hospital. Locomotive derailed and multiple coaches wrecked in the sudden smash.

J Hagen suffered a tyre blowout at the line.
D Corrie, back after weeks, won the three mile women’s road race yesterday. Eight riders started. J Appleby posted the fastest time of 12 minutes 15 seconds, while S Carvenett yielded position to aid B London who suffered cramps.
