Miners on southern and western NSW coalfields rejected the recommendation to continue the strike. Northern NSW, Queensland, and Tasmanian miners vote tomorrow to decide if the strike ends. Aggregate meetings may lead to a back to work order via a council vote or telegraphic poll.
John George Haigh spent a final day at Wandsworth Prison writing letters and smoking the daily ration as he awaits execution for murder. Special facilities allowed unlimited letters. The prison governor will visit tonight for a possible final talk before the execution. Relatives and friends visited, and the execution team is due this afternoon.
Meeting of Broken Hill Port Augusta council heard discussion on building a narrow gauge rail line from Broken Hill to Pirie and the potential effect on the town. Councillors noted possible benefits and directed further inquiry to Mr Russell MH R.
A Chinese source reports Red forces advancing in eight directions along a 1320 mile front from northwest China to Fukien on the coast and toward the Kwangei and Kwangtung borders. In Hunan they seek the highway to wartime capital as part of efforts to end the Liberman war.

In Police Court Alexander Street July 18 and 19 two traffic cases were heard. Robert Gifford Brown backed his car across the street near Central Mission colliding with Ian Hamilton Train on a motor cycle. Brown fined £4 plus court fees with seven days to pay. Ernest Reichelt admitted riding a bicycle in Alexander Street without keeping left, swung across in front of a car. fined £1 plus 10 court fees with 14 days to pay.
In a Monday night meeting health inspector B E Cooper reported on immunisation activity. During the prior fortnight 75 preschool children received skin tests, 68 received the first injection, and seven were given a refresher dose.
Mr Blanchard and entourage visited Pirie amid talks on Australia Asia relations and national policy. Emphasized balancing State and Federal powers, reforming immigration terms, removing the term Asiatic, and improving air of policy. Discussed soil erosion as a religious and economic issue and urged stronger resolve in industry and labour unity.

Mr E N Ellis president of Pirie Trades and Labor Council was chosen as one of six delegates to represent the Australian Boilermakers Society at the ACTU congress opening in Sydney on September 19. It marks the first Pirie industrial leader seat on the body amid union efforts to counter the leftward drift. At Pirie branch meeting Mr Bilis was elected local delegate to the Australian Labor Party convention in Adelaide next month.
