Five Burned to Death in British Air War Practice

Rain records and July showers brighten district outlook

More than a quarter inch of rain fell in Pirie at the weekend with July showers benefiting surrounding districts. Land Speed Record Trial Ends With Injuries

Several people were admitted to Adelaide Hospital after accidents yesterday afternoon as Sir Malcolm Campbell tested the Blue Bird at Lake Geneva. Violet Charles aged 20 fractured an ankle while skating in Toorak Road. John Fenimore Hunt 19 from Augusta street Helmsdale suffered a leg fracture when his motorcycle collided with a car on Amme High Way. Edward Allen 12 from Frome House injured an ankle on the Blue Bird during the test. Captain Eyston, retiring from speed attempts, raised the record speed to over 311 miles an hour on the Thunderbolt when the bicycle sideclipped.

Prize night at technical school showcases student awards

The Pirie Technical School prize night in the High School hall drew about 60 attendees. A £25 prize funded by Broken Hill Smokers funded top student awards across dressmaking, welding, and other subjects. Principal Mr Davis and chair Mr Yates praised extended courses, with trophies awarded to students in shorthand, business correspondence, needlework, dressmaking, welding, and chemistry among others. The event featured musical performances and thanks to contributors, with the mayor and staff lauded for support.

Tragic hit and run after greyhound race deaths two killed

Arthur Fftumphreys and his wife Honora were struck from behind by a car while walking home from the greyhound races. Honora Humphreys, 52, died instantly. Arthur suffered serious injuries. Nearby businessman John Muelmin was killed moments later as the car allegedly fled. A man was arrested and to appear in court tomorrow.
