A night road disaster on Prince's Highway near Terang left three dead and six hurt, four critically. Victims were passengers in a sedan driven by Russell returning from Warrnambool after football mates, with others in a tourer and a transport lorry and trailer carrying nine tons of sacks.
The Stormbird, famed for its link to author Zane Grey, is docked at Port Lincoln during a visit by American deep sea angler, fishing for edible salmon rather than sharks. It arrived yesterday from Whyalla and will stay a day or two before sailing to Pirie then back to Port Lincoln. The cutter is owned by Mr. A. Mitler and used mainly for commercial fishing, occasionally hosting sporting anglers.
A youth at Albyn Dinning near Bordertown suffered a deep eye injury when a steel clip about 3 inches long flew from a log-saw belt on G A Dinning's property. He was treated locally at Tatiara Hospital and then sent to Adelaide for specialist examination. the eye's sight may be affected.
A joint United States and Canadian meeting set for Wednesday in Washington will discuss defense problems and possible joint action with Britain. Plans include new airports on the Pacific and Atlantic coasts and along the St Lawrence River with radio guided air channels. Survey teams are assessing a highway route across British Columbia into Alaska to connect the two nations on Canadian soil. Britain once opposed military highways. now there is none. The US is to fund about 4 million pounds for early construction.
Adelaide Sunday report states Rymill defeated Russ Sawers to win the Stite amateur golf title. He becomes the only amateur to win his club title at Rooyonga, marking a notable defense of his championship.

Copper gains range from 2 to 13 pence with spot at 44 14/4 to 44 18/1 for three months. tin shows unchanged spot at 44 9 with small forward shifts. lead soft and forward prices edge up to around 16 26 for spot and 14 15/7 a ton for other terms. silver and gold quotations show modest gains and firmness.
An inquest into the South Mine disaster at Broken Hill heard evidence about the fire and rescue efforts. The coroner praised rescue workers including inspector of mines Mr Wilson for their leadership and the safety concerns raised during the incident.
Moscow reports Soviet airmen have shot down 34 Japanese planes since May 2 amid ongoing clashes on the Mongolian frontier. In a weekly tally, Russian losses are listed at 81 aircraft, with Japanese losses claimed at 34.

J A Mair was sworn in as premier with a cabinet unchanged save for his removal and faced an early test as the Legislative Assembly convenes. UAP factional strife, Spooner supporters, and Labor aid threaten Mair’s grip, while potential dissolution or Lang’s summons loom if the government falters.
The Tour of Mafra a 55 mile cycle race was won by Te Thomas of Moffrs. Starting from 2 minutes 4 seconds he won by half a length from R Lestie of Flemington and Kensington 12 minutes behind with Desa Tose land five lengths behind third. Toseland earned fastest time honors finishing in 2 hours 3 minutes 2 seconds.
