South Australian Sailor Wins the V C
Private Jorgen Christison Jensen, wounded last week, won the Victoria Cross in France. He and five comrades rushed a post with 45 Germans and a machine gun. He single handedly scaled the parapet to capture the gunner, saving prisoners under heavy fire. Born in Denmark, Jensen naturalised in South Australia and known in Port Pirie and Port Adelaide.

City Engineers Report on Stone Paving and Footpath Damage

Mayor's Report on Road Work and Soldiers Fund Appeal

Seaman Injured After Fall on Adelaide Steamship Nardoo
A seaman, T Bennett, fell 35 feet in the hold while preparing fore and aft beams on the Nardoo at Edithburgh. He suffered a fractured left arm and severe head chest and hip injuries, receiving treatment before transport to Adelaide Hospital. Captain Bert James RAF is reported killed on May 7 after service in England and France. Other war casualty notices include Private Leadley Bowen Wright killed in action March 10 and Private John Henry West killed in action April 25 1918. several wounded or missing colleagues are named along with brief biographical details.

Port Adelaide Council Hails Promotion of Henley’s Son
The Port Adelaide Council approved sending a congratulatory letter to Mr and Mrs Henley on their son’s promotion to Lieutenant Colonel, DSO award, and wartime mentions. At Thursday’s meeting, condolence letters were also to be sent to relatives of Port Adelaide soldiers killed in action, including Captain Bert James and several privates.
