Captain John McDiarmid of Claire Street Semaphore retires from Port Adelaide pilot service after 25 years. He began at 24 in sailing and steam, served on Dickson Harrison Line ships to Baltic ports, migrated to Australia 38 years ago, later captained the collier Corio, joined pilots in May 1905, and once commanded the Montcalm carrying 3,000 tons of wheat from Semaphore to St. Navarre France during wartime.
