A committee appointed by the Port Adelaide Council is examining developments in the port area. The inquiry seeks to clarify policy, timing, and governance. Officials expect recommendations to be reported to council.
The new Port Adelaide Post Office will officially open on Monday at 11am by Deputy Postmaster General E. P. Ramsay. Port Adelaide Mayor P. J. Brown invites leading citizens to attend and be entertained after the ceremony at the Port Adelaide Council Chamber.
Louisa Halferty accused her husband Hugh Halferty a ship's fireman of violent threats toward her and their baby on March 10. She described repeated assaults, including being knocked down and punched, with threats to use a razor and to hurt the child. The husband denied the charge but was bound over to keep the peace for two years, with £30 surety and £218 costs, or two months in jail if failed.
Frederick Wilhwart Neander, 63, a Wellington Street resident and wharf laborer, was found dead by hanging in his Alberton home on Thursday morning. His daughter Margaret LeLeu, who visited weekly for chores, discovered the body. An inquest was deemed unnecessary by City Coroner Hansberry.
The Wandana delayed leaving Port Adelaide after an on board dispute. Second engineer John Lang was wounded by a hammer in the engine room. a crew member, William Robert Wade, was charged with unlawfully and maliciously wounding him. Wade appeared in Port Adelaide Police Court and was remanded on bail of £50 with surety.
The District Trained Nursing Society Port Adelaide branch struggles with finances and ticket shortages for transport. A committee will evaluate a suitable motor car and seek renewed annual subscriptions to raise the needed capital, with strong support expected from Mayor FJ Brown.
Port Adelaide plans a March 30 button day to aid tubercular soldiers as a large civic meeting in the council chamber, led by Mayoress Mrs F J Brown. Miss E Cleggett lauded the Mayoress work, noting the huge turnout and enthusiasm among attendees including society secretary Miss Cleggett and society president Mr F Botting.
A Port Adelaide deputation of married unemployed men met Mayor PF Brows at the Town Hall to press for shelter for job seekers from the Government Labor Bureau and a share of available work. They urged a wharf shed near the fog Stall at the end of Commercial Road and complained of scarce Port Adelaide employment compared to Adelaide. The mayor acknowledged the unemployment strain and promised to contact labor authorities, noting he had little relief since taking office.
Boxing at Port Adelaide on Friday March 23 at the Working Men's Association Hall will be run by promoters Mike Johnson and W B Lock. Johnson plans to retire from active boxing but will promote tournaments to aid juniors and St Joseph's Orphanage Largs Bay. Main bout Bruce Armstrong versus Roy Lamb. other matches include Jack Kay vs Lou Omby Buller Jarman vs rs Pearce Johnny Myers vs Jack Job and more. En Waddy will oversee as former Australian champion.
The Misses Hasse of Rundle Street Adelaide have opened an establishment on St Vincent Street Port Adelaide offering dresses and coats at reasonable prices. This evening Mitcham Brass Band will perform selections in front of the premises opposite the Globe Hotel. Look for the red lights.
