The Semaphore and District Traders Association held its annual meeting in Semaphore Town Hall. The balance sheet showed a healthy balance despite a £10 carnival fund contribution, with economy cited as key. The descriptive booklet Semaphore Beach gained nationwide distribution. The committee credited the secretary and Messrs Woodroffe and Halbert for publishing success and noted plans to improve main street and foreshore. Affiliation talks with United Traders Association were in progress. Officers elected included Mayor A O R Tapp as patron and A Passingham as president.
Sir Archibald Strong professor of English at Adelaide University returns to South Australia by the mail steamer Osterley. Also aboard for Sydney is Lieut Turney RN and Majors Boasu and Northcott as they retire from Melbourne after Staff College training. Other Osterley passengers include Sir Archibald Strong and Mrs Crompton. Nestor liner brings Mrs Dyer Dr and Mrs MacKay and others returning to Melbourne. Katoomba carries Lady Spencer wife of Sir Baldwin Spencer to Port Adelaide.
Mr S Brown of Rosetta Street Glanville was operating an electric crane discharging limestone from the True Blue at Birkenhead Wharf when a short circuit knocked him back. He suffered muscle shocks to his right arm and leg and was treated at Port Adelaide Casualty Hospital.
The Sugar Refinery fire at Glanville continued to burn on Friday night with crews on the stack and lines extended to control it. Port Adelaide officials debated fire apparatus readiness including the Vigilant tug and two motor pumps, while insurers and staff arrangements were reported as the wreckage smoldered and salvage efforts began.
About 4,500 residents from Mallat and nearby districts traveled by special trains to Semaphore for the annual seaside picnic. Mayor ALO R. Tapp welcomed the visitors, praising Semaphore’s beach and promising museum gymnasium access in bad weather. District council reps spoke of progress on the foreshore and improvements over the past decade.
Sgt Wilkin reports a motor bus driven by Joseph Bates struck Reginald Ernest Palmer near Semaphore Jetty at 10.5 pm on Saturday. Palmer was thrown onto a rear mudguard, examined by Dr Poole, then taken to Port Adelaide Casualty Hospital where he was found to have escaped practically without injury.
Early Friday evening Carl Berthien of Birkenhead was struck on his right arm by a sling of timber while working at Port Adelaide Wharf. He was taken to Fort Adelaide Casualty Hospital where doctors found the forearm fractured.
About noon last Friday Ed ward Rockwell a single man boarding at Hindley Street Adelaide fell from the top of a timber stack while working for Cowell Bros at Port Adelaide He showed signs of brain concussion and was taken to Port Adelaide Casualty Hospital for observation.
Plainclothes Constable Donnellan reported to City Coroner Dr Ramsay Smith on a fire that burned a sugar and drew many bees to the site. The coroner ordered an inquest at Port Adelaide Courthouse at 11.16 this morning, with proceedings underway.
Port Adelaide B Football Club announces an annual general meeting next Monday in Foresters Hall Nite Street Port Adelaide. Election of officers will be held and an annual report reviewed. GEO A Carr serves as honorary secretary.
