Sharks at Henley Beach Stir Local Bathers

Bathers at Henley Beach were frightened Wednesday morning when three sharks about four feet long appeared in shallow water near the Grange. They exited the sea for safety, prompting calls for better bathing safety provisions.

Wartime Medal For Young Australia Bravery

Sergeant E L Skinner M M has received the Military Medal for bravery. The 18 year old, born in England and raised in Western Australia, enlisted after returning to the state to pursue fruit growing. He previously served with the 18th and 1st Battalions and is now with the 1st Machine Gun Section alongside his father Captain Skinner.

Desertions From Overseas Vessels Tied to Local Arrests

Port Adelaide police report difficulties recovering deserters from ships in port. Two men were traced to a local house after being brought back to the vessel. Police warn that harboring deserters risks War Precautions Regulations and may invite drastic action. One deserter was found at a factory in Birkeshead after leaving Monday and claimed he swam to shore.

Wheat stacking stoppage grows as unions push day labor

Contract work at Outer Harbor and Port Adelaide ended January 9 after a Waterside Workers Union branch contract expired. Members oppose the contract system, demand day labor, and a ministerial decision by Sir Richard Butler is awaited. Over 200 men affected, most at Outer Harbor.
