Mr. Cook, Minister for the Navy, declares a new scheme will have seaplanes scout to 200 miles from shore. Wireless warning will summon aircraft at radar sighting, and attacks may follow. The aim is a completely danger free coast and eased tensions after recent unrest.
Bathers at Henley Beach were frightened Wednesday morning when three sharks about four feet long appeared in shallow water near the Grange. They exited the sea for safety, prompting calls for better bathing safety provisions.
Sergeant E L Skinner M M has received the Military Medal for bravery. The 18 year old, born in England and raised in Western Australia, enlisted after returning to the state to pursue fruit growing. He previously served with the 18th and 1st Battalions and is now with the 1st Machine Gun Section alongside his father Captain Skinner.
Port Adelaide police report difficulties recovering deserters from ships in port. Two men were traced to a local house after being brought back to the vessel. Police warn that harboring deserters risks War Precautions Regulations and may invite drastic action. One deserter was found at a factory in Birkeshead after leaving Monday and claimed he swam to shore.
Rev D T Whalley of Port Adelaide Congregational Church to speak on imperial questions before the All British League at Port Adelaide on Wednesday evening March 6. Whalley, English and descendant of Oliver Cromwell, is expected to deliver a forcible address to inspire all Britishers and the public at the Theatre.
Town Clock face now better illuminated after four 50 candle power lights replaced prior gas jets. Local operator W F Haire at the Ozone installed the apparatus, improving visibility of the Town Hall timepiece.
Contract work at Outer Harbor and Port Adelaide ended January 9 after a Waterside Workers Union branch contract expired. Members oppose the contract system, demand day labor, and a ministerial decision by Sir Richard Butler is awaited. Over 200 men affected, most at Outer Harbor.
