Cemetery Assault Case Against Crowe Heard at Cheltenham

Edward James Crowe, a labourer, was accused of assaulting his wife at the graveside of their child in Cheltenham Cemetery on May 17. The court granted an adjournment for a material witness, Williams, who Crowe claimed could rebut his wife’s testimony. Crowe failed to produce Williams, and Crowe himself did not appear for the resumed hearing. The magistrate condemned the assault as a disgraceful act and fined Crowe £2 plus costs or six weeks imprisonment.
