Magistrate Says Story Framed In Liquor Case On Lawn
An application to reduce a £5 fine for carrying liquor during prohibited hours from the Portland Hotel was refused after the magistrate deemed the defendant Arthur Harold Simmons story a fabrication. Simmons claimed he bought wine around 3 pm and only went to fetch sandwiches. constables later accused him of buying it at the hotel. The judge dismissed the tale as obvious deceit.
