Fifty-Second Annual Social of Australian Institute of Marine Engineers
The Australian Institute of Marine and Power Engineers held its fifty-second annual social in the Mazonic Hall Adelaide on December 20 with dignitaries including Hon. Makin MHR and Professor Kerr Grant in attendance. The Secretary’s report noted membership stability at 356 in Adelaide and 2712 nationally, highlighted ongoing examinations, planned Institute Chambers renovations costing about £200, and strong links with London and other engineers. The program featured music and recitals, with tribute to late Port Adelaide figure Mr. Channon, a long-time educator and community supporter, whose funeral was held at Cheltenham Cemetery.

Death of J W Channon Prominent Port Adelaide Figure
J W Channon, prominent Port Adelaide resident and former council member, died on December 23 after injuries from a fall when boarding a train at Largs. Born in Alberton in 1850, he lived in the district most of his life, contributed to charitable work, and was renowned as a musician and church organist. He served as Port Adelaide alderman and supported patriotic causes during the war.

Rescue of 14 Year Old Regan Narrows Drowning Threat
A 14 year old boy Regan from Monash on the River Murray nearly drowned at Semaphore Beach Christmas Day after a wide current pushed him into deep water. Lifeguard H Cathro from the Semaphore Beach Patrol swam to him and quickly pulled him ashore.

Conviction Without Penalty Reported at Port Adelaide Court
A defendant received a conviction without penalty in a Port Adelaide Police Tyre case on Monday December 2. The matter centered on a refusal to move when asked by plainclothes Constable Hanrahan. Inspector Noble noted Sergeant McTierney was ill and hospitalised, preventing attendance and delaying the case.

Man in Port Adelaide Court Pleads Indecent Language
In Port Adelaide Police Court on December 23 Sydney Chases faced a charge of indecent language on Jetty Road, Largs. He pleaded not guilty, was fined 15 shillings with five days imprisonment in default. Inspector E Nobley prosecuted. Constable J E Allen and witnesses Wille Henry Seagrim and Thomas Hergon testified for Adams. Defendant may not be allowed time to pay.

Successful Engineer Receives Prize Essay Trophy in Adelaide
At the Annual Social of the Adelaide District of the Australian Institute of Marine and Power Engineers the Mayor Aly Lewis presented the institute’s trophy to prize essayist for 1929, Mr. C. V. Cash, for his essay on steam boilers. President Shand offered congratulations and spoke on the institute’s aim to advance engineering knowledge among members and the need for ongoing study in marine engineering. Secretary P. A. Box emphasized keeping the institute’s object in mind.

Port Adelaide man jailed for unlawful possession of groceries
At Port Adelaide Police Court before Me G W Hulcombe SM Patrick Burma aged 46 pleaded not guilty. Constable W Sutherland testified he saw Burma with a case on Commercial Road and later at the station. Burma said he bought the goods from a man in the street for 3 shillings. The magistrate found the charge proved and sentenced Burma to three weeks imprisonment.

Well Off Quater Harbor Missing Man Report at Outer Harbor
Plainclothes Constable E. C. Pearce of Poly Ade- Hide Spas police investigated a report that a man jumped into the water near Outer Harbor Wharf last Friday night. A hat and coat were found near the Customs office window, but no trace of the man. Description: about 60, medium build, 5 ft 10 in, grey moustache, wearing dark grey tweed coat and brown felt hat. no papers recovered.
