The union argues workers should be paid for holiday hours plus the extra four hours if they logged more than 41 hours in a week. Some men may work 45 hours yet receive the same pay as those at 41 hours. The stoppage was without notice and H Graves and Co trolleys stayed idle on Friday. The Master Carriers Association decision likely settles the case.
Port Adelaide store men and Packers union members held a noon meeting over pay demands. Workers, earning 2 18s weekly, sought 3 10s with holidays for gangers and 3 5s for ordinary hands. Employers offered 3 3s for ordinary hands without holidays. A conference in Adelaide was planned after adjourned discussions with the Master Carriers Association. The dispute risks spreading to the Drivers' Union.
On a Saturday morning Graves Hill Co drivers halted work after a pay dispute but resumed under temporary settlement. A new dissatisfaction on Thursday spread among Port Adelaide carriers under the same wage agreement, with the two horse trolley drivers losing £34 weekly for 50 hours and holidays.
Several men faced the Port Adelaide Police Court on unlawful betting charges. Walter Maggs asked for an adjournment to January 6. Reuben Smith and Thomas Mack pleaded guilty and were fined £5 with 15 shillings costs. Brown O Flaherty Rover Walthe Forbes pleaded guilty with fines from £5 to £10 and 15 shillings costs.
