A federal executive has levied a penalty exceeding £2000 in a case concerning noncompliance. The order sets financial restitution and terms for compliance, detailing enforcement steps and potential further action if conditions are not met.
The Federal Executive of the Waterside Workers Federation fined Port Adelaide branch about £2000 for refusing to work steamer Charter vessels Clan Moorer and Baron Maclay at Outer Harbor. The branch denies paying and weighs possible disassociation. Officials plan to meet Melbourne authorities to resolve the matter.
Ex mayor A W Brown of Port Adelaide is celebrated as a progressive businessman and civic leader. Born 1869 at Mount Arden Station, he built a large tailor hatter mercer firm, served on Port Adelaide City Council, and twice led as mayor championing deep drainage tramways and cement water channels while backing ANA and District Trained Nurses work. His wife Laura Tarr died earlier, leaving a lasting community impact.
Mr J Lavery and his brother, long engaged in the spirits and liquor trade in Ireland, travel to Australia by the Carrebool. He cites severe financial stringency, high taxation, and banks tightening on security. Wages remain depressed, rents high, and living costs exceed wartime levels. Many Irish seek emigration to Canada, America, or New Zealand for work and settlement schemes. He notes widespread migration and limited good weather in December.
The Missioner J Stanley reports last week's sailors concert at The Rest in Nile Street was a fine program. Miss H Neilson led with opening selections and stirring songs, while Miss L Heywood Smith and Marjory Daley drew strong applause. Known seafarers Heywood Smith, Thacken, Boctop, Pop and Italian vocalist Minelli offered varied numbers, with banjo and mandoline pieces delighting the audience.
Sugar Refinery employees held their annual outing at Tea Tree Gully last Saturday. Fifty men participated, traveling by Fossie’s motor bus and private cars. Cricket was played 15 a side, captain’s team winning by two runs after a 129 total. A hot dinner at the Tea Tree Gully Hotel followed, with songs and dances in the evening. Mr. F H Wisdom, honorary secretary, praised organizers and thanked Fossie, Russell, McPherson, Sansom, and Perring for arrangements and provisions.
