Man charged with unlawfully obtaining liquor at Federal Hotel

At Port Judelaida Police Court on Tuesday John Leslie faced a charge, based on Inspector Noblet’s information, of unlawfully obtaining liquor in licensed premises during prohibited hours at Semaphore on November 24. The defendant pleaded not guilty. Constable Hansberry testified seeing him at the billiard saloon and with a bottle of beer protruding from his trousers. The witness and licensee Mr Shaughnessy questioned him. the defendant admitted going to the pictures and obtaining the drinks. He was fined £1, reduced to £1 with costs, and imprisonment terms noted.

Federated Millers and Mill Owners in Arbitration Case

The President of the Federal Arbitration Court presided over hearings between mill owners and the Federated Millers and Mill Workers union. The union sought better conditions and wages while mill owners demanded lower rates and longer hours. A 48 hour week was demanded by owners and rejected by the union. Conference failed and the matter advanced back to court as the union opposed reintroducing a two hour extension to the weekly schedule.

Seaman Punches Door Glass at Port Adelaide Hotel

James Dickson, an American negro seaman, punched through the hotel barroom door glass at the Criterion Hotel in Port Adelaide. His left-hand artery was severed. Constables Scott and Miller provided first aid before taking him to Casualty Hospital for surgical care.

Two Drowning Fatalities At Semaphore

Two young boys drowned in separate Semaphore incidents this week. Kenneth Love, 8, and Louis Love, 12, ventured into the water with Eugene, their younger brother staying on shore. Kenneth sank after venturing beyond the deep water line. Louis and Eugene alerted their father as help arrived. An inquest was deemed unnecessary. In the second tragedy, 13-year-old William Shoobridge disappeared after looking for his younger brother John at Semaphore jetty. Harold Ware recovered John’s body. resuscitation attempts failed. An inquiry was not held.

Semaphore Drowns Fatalities Prompt Lifesaving Action

Port Adelaide Council discussed recent drowning fatalities and urged the Minister to provide lifesaving appliances along the beach. A survey of danger points was proposed, with a plan to appoint a patrol on the Largs to Semaphore beach during holidays and subsidise the patrol.

Fourd Dead in Bed at Purt Ade Wide Residence

Thomas Ely, a fisherman aged years, was found dead in bed at his Church Street home on Guy Coroner Dr. was notified and deemed something unnecessary. The incident occurred at 6 30 am. Police and coroner reports indicate a death at the residence with no immediate signs of foul play.
