Port Adelaide welcomes R H Smith popularly known as Dick Smith to the mayoralty. Born in 1867 at Bereton he pledges non party governance and fair treatment for all districts. A former councilman and Labor alderman, he returns after a hard fought non party contest.
The passage notes she is the daughter of an early Port Adelaide citizen and will assume her new civic duties in the city she and her husband prize. It hopes councillors wives will support her, as she faces the challenges ahead.
Tomorrow the Semaphore Wondergraph shows Peggy the Will o the Wisp with Mabel Taliferro in the title role. An Irish tale of a penniless girl turned highwayman and a daring rescue, plus noted Irish scenery. Also screened is the Golden Eagle adaptation of Jaffery Chayne with C Aubrey Smith and Eleanor Woodruff, followed by The Shielding Shadow episode and Clover's Rebellion with Anita Stewart, Fatty Arbuckle comedy The Other Man, and Pathe's Gazette billed as all-round merit.
The Yatala Band of Hope Society held its fortnightly meeting at the Methodist Church near the Alberton railway station on Wednesday evening, December 5, with good attendance. Vice-President Mr C Campion chaired a varied programme by Miss L Darling featuring songs and recitations. Participants included Miss Hazel Behn Master Dean Bollen and Mr A V Howe Snoiss Lovey Savage and Mr A Keeling spoke on his 524 mile West Coast trip and band expansion.
A November 29 picnic at Long Gully featured events such as Sheffield Handicap won by L Evans and D. Craig taking medals. Funfair races included Single Ladies and All Comers with multiple locals rewarded by medals.
