At Messrs McIlwraith McEacharn Co yards a coal trolley jammed on a rail and the horses struggled in mud as shunting teams freed it. A nearby observer blamed neglect since the Harbors Board assumed control, calling the situation a scandal and urging maintenance of wharves and yards.
Alberton State School old scholars plan an Honor Roll to record enlistments and seek donor support with contact details for A W Wilson and C H Icker. Major Rowley will conduct Salvation Army services at Port corps on August 25 and 29 while the Glanville Band of Hope hosts a Dale Street Hall concert on September 4 5 6.
The Railways Standing Committee reports on connecting rail to Port Adelaide Corporation's Salisbury quarry. It finds output 22 000 to 28 000 tons yearly, two shifts uneconomical, no capacity increase from the corporation, a 26 year usable life, need for road transport links and storage bins, and cost about 11 per ton. It concludes it is cheaper for the corporation to buy elsewhere and that no other bodies would buy Salisbury metal, so building the railway from the main North line is not expedient.

Captain and Mrs. W. Germein of Darton Street Sandwell are informed their son Lieutenant Walter I Germein has been wounded in the war.
While moving wine casks in the hold of the steamer Corio at Port Adelaide on Thursday evening, Mr. J Caple of Connor Street Glanville had his hand crushed between two hogsheads. The injury was treated at Port Adelaide Casualty Hospital.
One of Port Adelaide’s oldest coastal masters Captain Griffiths McKay died at Elder Road Birkenhead last Wednesday aged 71. Born March 1 1847 in Port Adelaide he served a sail making apprenticeship and steered in many ketches then commanded steamships including the Juno until 1917. He leaves wife Agnes Ferguson and two children Mr A McKay and Miss Gladys McKay.
Mr Gunin M P notes that some Islington workers have been on short time for two years. The Railways Commissioner reports only 168 of 1400 men are on short time, suggesting a need for change in staffing or policy.
At a Port Adelaide Local Board of Health meeting on Thursday Health Officer Dr P Bollen reported the influenza prevalence was best marked. He said beyond persuading the public on sanitary requirements like fresh air open windows and general hygiene conditions little could be done to prevent infection.

He enlisted 1914 and served in Gallipoli and France before air force service. He was 25. brother George was killed in 1915 Singapore riot. Corporal Arthur Smart dies of wounds July 30. he enlisted 1914, Served in Gallipoli and Somme, four years in service. Private W J Forbes wounded in France. Private Ernest Wilkins missing after hospital ship Wanida torpedoing. he has two brothers at the front.
The Methodist group wired the fine property The Terraces in North Adelaide to equip as a modern hospital on one and a half acres with up to date residence and conveniences. Questioning how long Port Adelaide will have a proper hospital replaces the current inadequate setup. The piece stresses the hospital's importance beyond a dressing station and notes Casualty Hospital is little more than a dressing station.
Claude Waanders aged 16 living at Exmouth Road Glanville suffered a leg jam between two wine casks while they were being rolled into a shed on Commercial Wharf. He was attended at Port Adelaide Casualty Hospital after the mishap near the Port pavilion.
The State Recruiting Committee writes Licet Col. C F Butler DSO who is working hard to raise 590 men as reinforcements. On August Mth accompanied by Recruiting Officer Virgo Lieut Col Butler addressed about 300 men at Dry Creek. He urged eligible men to join and help the front, noting the need for support as the war rages in Europe and on Yorke’s Peninsula.
