At about 620 pm Mr T E Anderson of Meal Largs was fishing on the Largs jetty when he noticed a woman sitting near a seat. He heard a splash and saw a disturbance, prompting him and another man to summon help at the Largs Pier Hotel and notify police.
The Commissioner of Police informs MP Mr. J. Price that after inspecting the Oshorne district he believes rapid development justifies establishing two police stations there. Mounted officer Pyne is already stationed at Largs and arrangements are expected to be completed within a few days.
In a heated session MP J L Price pressed the Premier and Attorney General over 1917 plans for Port Adelaide wharf developments. He questioned why coal wharves near Osborne would prompt gantry sites and higher coal costs, risking local business. The Premier said papers were on the table. officials pledged a formal reply.
At Port Adelaide Police Court Leo Tucker licensee of Semaphore Hotel faced charges of unlawfully supplying liquor during prohibited hours on June 1. Evidence from constables described sightings of two men entering the hotel with beer bottles and a late contact with Mrs Tucker. The case was adjourned to August 31 for further proceedings.
Semaphore War Memorial Committee selects a granite clock tower design surmounted by a marble female figure symbolizing peace. The 36 ft monument features a four faced electric clock and a laurel wreath inscription honoring all who fell in World War I. Funds target £2000 with £726 remaining from carnival accounts.
A young shipping man returns from the Aachen with 25 000 marks gained for sixpence and plans to convert for travel to Adelaide. He trades for 2000 marks at sixpence and an extra 800 marks, hoping to cover his fare. Despite high nominal earnings in marks, the British exchange severely reduces purchasing power.
John Howell a Birkenhead milk vendor faced charges for using insulting words toward an important witness on the Outer Harbor Road August 10. The Port Adelaide Police Court adjourned the case to this morning after Howell claimed late summons. The prosecution argued for witness control. counsel fees for the morning were refused.
A report from Glasgow notes Professor Ewart of Edinburgh University experiments aimed at improving wool quality and quantity in British sheep under a Wool and Wollen Industries Association committee. Since 1895 he has crossed horses with zebras to test telegony, though no evidence was found. He travels with his wife, originally planning to visit Anchines then Sydney, but arrives Adelaide and proceeds to Melbourne by train.
