Election signals fall provincial vote and railway policy

Price Ellison reports Premier McBride dissolved the House with election set for November 25. Government and McKenzie Mann plan a railway expansion from Yellowhead Pass to Vancouver, with Kettle Valley Railway linking Midway to Penitton and Merritt to the C P R. Death of Mrs. Emma Rand in New Westminster

Mrs Emma Rand wife of broker A K Rand died in New Westminster after years of illness with trips to California and Kamloops seeking health. Age 38 native of the city she leaves a husband five children and many relatives including grandmother Mrs George De Beck and sisters Mrs J Alex Cunningham and Mrs David Douglas. Otto Gaube opens a restaurant with confectionery business.

Lakeshore Telephone Franchise Sparks Council Debate

At the October 15 meeting C S Stevens for Lakeshore Telephone Co sought a ten year franchise, the council offered five years, and Stevens agreed to five. A $50 yearly bonus was dropped after his revenue argument. Rates would be $2.50 for homes and $3.00 for businesses. The council kept a takeover option if unsatisfied. On Monday, Engineer Kilmer discussed a domestic water supply study for Penticton, offering a preliminary investigation in about ten days.

Osborn and Miss Alma Neil Wed in Vernon Home

Charles Dean Osborn of Vernon and Alma Wright Neil of Penticton were married by Rev. G O Fallis at the bride’s parents home. The ceremony had only close friends, and the couple left by the Str Okanagan for Vernon to reside.

Steam and Steel at Midway Linking Lines to Coast

Nicola branch of the CPR will be extended to join the Columbia and Western line at Midway, enabling through communication from the boundary to the coast. The route will pass through the Similkameen and Okanagan districts, with surveys possibly increasing. CPR head Sir Thomas Shaughnessy called the question live and hinted the Coldwater route may be chosen, a decision with major implications for Merritt and the Nicola region. GTP surveyors are active in the Nicola, underscoring the project’s significance.
