Squatting Industry Centenary Marks Australian Wool Growth

The centenary of squatting in Australia recalls Captain Macarthur and Governor Phillip as wool industry founders. Starting with 29 sheep in 1792 and expanding to over 100, then 60 breeding ewes in 1794, crossing rams yielded finer wool. In 1805 the NSW governor received orders to grant 5000 acres for sheep pasture, giving rise to Australia’s first large sheep station. At that time 10,889 sheep existed nationwide, a number dwarfed by today’s million-scale flocks.
