Norman Development Intercedes In Manitoba River Dispute

Representatives from Manitoba government and River Sawmills meet in The Pas at Norman Regional Development Corporation’s urging to resolve a dispute linked to River’s suspended 100 million board foot sawmill project. The Pas concerns follow a recent Chamber of Commerce meeting and Norman action.

Simple Approval Results In Turmoil

Town Council discussion over Norman Regional Development Corporation approval erupts into a clash. Councillor Ed Johanson disclosed a Churchill meeting on September 25 and an interim proxy arrangement with Councillor Jack Kennedy. Former Councillor Russ Tawse was noted as the second representative.

Hydro Knocked Off After Car Hits House

Six people were hospitalized with serious injuries after a 1969 Chrysler left Third Street and struck a house on Bell Avenue. The impact knocked out a utility pole transformer causing a 35 minute townwide blackout. Driver Albert Anderson of Plocstran Sask led the car east on Third Street and lost control near Thompson Supply, crossing Bell Avenue and hitting Harold Griffith’s concrete foundation at 227 Third Street. Passengers include Marrie-Anne Daniels of Saskatchewan and The Pas residents John McLeod Robert McGillivary John Berens and Roland Fortin. Five were moved to Winnipeg General Hospital. the others remained at St Anthony’s Hospital.

Sam Waller Honored as Little Northern Museum Opens

The Little Northern Museum opened September 1 with about 200 attendees and was dedicated to Sam Waller. Rotarel president Jack Johnson led the dedication while Al Hillsden praised Waller, founder and curator, noting the 1958 opening and Waller’s lifetime collection attracting 73,000 visitors from Canada, the U.S., and distant nations.

Tragic death of 3 year old Garry Lussier at Valleyview Trailer Court

The body of 3 year old Garry Lussier was recovered from a sewage lagoon at Valleyview Trailer Court on Sunday around 1:30 PM. Police say he was playing on a wooden platform with two other children when he lost balance and fell in. Garry was the son of Arthur and Doreen Lussier of the trailer court. No inquest was held.

Dree Grant Involved in Trailer Court Plan

Chief Gordon Lathlin announced the Indian Trailer Court at Lathlin will open by October end with 168 trailer lots ready. The J.R. Corporation project funding now includes a $50,000 DREE grant, a $50,000 Manitoba Development Fund loan, and Band support of $50,000, plus prior funds.

Citizens object to sidewalk construction

Five residents attended Town Council to oppose a west side sidewalk on Head Avenue from Fleet Street to the Rivers. They said no Herald ad reached them and they were not consulted when the petition was presented. They warned the local improvement would burden their taxes. The group had been told by Mayor Trager to attend and present concerns. Earlier advocates had seen ads in The Herald on May 27 and June 3.

Meat Plant Hearing Set For Sept 21 In The Pas

Municipal Board adjourns the hearing on Porky Packers role in re zoning land in The Pas to September 21 after opening August 1. Winnipeg counsel objected to evidence from 1969 and efforts to sequence events leading to a planning amendment. The Pas officials and witnesses paused for three weeks due to board members’ prior commitments.
