Stock Car Club Sees Year End Banquet Triumph

The Pas stock car club crowned John Pierson Best Member of the Year and Jack Smith Most Popular Car at the Stock Jacks Annual Fling ending 1971. Fans packed the banquet and dance as the mayor spoke, marking a successful season.

Big Brothers Board Chosen in The Pas

The Big Brothers movement in The Pas names a 2024 board to organize and recruit volunteers to mentor boys without fathers. John Hewitt is chairman with Ed Tellier as vice chair, Mrs Gerry Orke as secretary, Len Harrison handling publicity and fundraising, and Rev F Muldrew with Father Boulanger steering screening and matching.

The Pas Forestry Complex Nets 150000 Tax for 1972

The Pas Town Council approved a 1972 tax agreement of 150000 for the four companies forming The Pas Forestry Complex. This doubles the 1971 payment of 75000 and was set at a special council meeting on October 12. The deal came after a October 7 finance committee meeting with the Receiver Manager and advisers, before the October 15 assessment roll deadline.

Advance Poll Opens Friday for Three Nights in The Pas

An advance poll for next week's election runs Thursday, Friday, and Monday at town offices from 5 to 9 PM. Four stations Elk's Nor Lite Salvation Army Hall and Keewatin Community College open 9 AM to 9 PM. About 4500 names on voters list, with many newcomers and 18 year olds. under 21 vote participates for the first time in a mayoral race between Jack Kennedy and Mayor Trager. Three council seats feature Audrey Batchelor Jim Fasano Gus Gelowitz Bart Kobar Walter Krivda Doug McBride and Alex Wilchowy.

Weaver Named Manager of CN Hudson Bay Area

A C Weaver was appointed manager of Canadian National Railways Hudson Bay Area effective November 1, announced by J C Gardiner regional vice president. He will base at Dauphin succeeding retiree L M Thomson. Weaver, a McGill electrical engineer, began CN work in 1948 at Moneton New Brunswick and has held multiple CN transport roles before a 1969 government loan for special duties.

McBryde Moves For Blacktop Meeting

Ron McBryde MLA for The Pas says no talks on blacktop until after the civic election. He plans to ask Peter Burtniak highways minister and Sid Green cabinet minister to meet with The Pas Town Council to discuss a proposed program.

D D D Service Planned for The Pas in 1972

The Manitoba Telephone System announced that The Pas exchange will receive Direct Distance Dialing in summer 1972. MTS Northern Manager F R Maher said DDD lets customers dial station to station long distance calls to most North American and Hawaii stations. Calls from The Pas to other communities north of the 53rd will be placed directly.

Cars Tagged At Arena

Motorists are warned the area in front of the arena and curling rink bounded by the concrete entrance is not a parking zone. With winter approaching, youngsters dash out in gear with hoods up and may not notice oncoming cars. Offenders will be tagged by police in this area.

Kinette Club Donation Sparks Liberation Theme

Kinette Club of The Pas presents a $500 cheque to Harold Grundy, pool committee chair, with 1970 president Bette Ferguson and 1971 president Pat Bracegirdle assisting. The fund, drawn with negotiable signature by Ferguson and treasurer Mavis Jones, supported the indoor pool, reflecting a Liberation Movement impulse amid earlier $400 grants to Kinsmen.
