Millions of Acres to be Reclaimed by Lowering Saskatchewan River
Report by O W W Chariton and T H Dun details blasting a submerged rock wall at Demi-Charge Rapids to create a canal around Grand Rapids. Lowering river level by about 19 feet could reclaim 4,000,000 acres of prime farmland at an estimated cost of ten million dollars, with Cedar Lake disappearing as arable land and flood risks near Moose Lake and Le Pas reduced. Navigation would remain feasible as water volume shifts to a deeper, narrower channel. The low water level would remove dangers to boats entering Le Pas by exposing submerged banks.
